The 1978 year group of the West Africa Secondary School Old Students Association (WASSOSA) showcased their commitment to their alma mater by inaugurating a set of dining hall furniture in Accra. The donation consisted of 60 tables and 120 benches, aimed at alleviating some of the challenges faced by the school.
The Headmistress of West Africa Senior High School (WASHS), Dr Shine Agatha Ofori, expressed gratitude for the donation as it addressed a significant issue at the school. Formerly, students had to queue for food or stand while eating due to a shortage of dining tables and chairs. This impacted academic activities as students spent valuable time at the dining hall instead of focusing on their studies.
Dr Ofori highlighted that the initiative to provide the furniture came from WASSOSA 1978, who had requested a list of the school’s needs. The group chose to tackle the dining hall challenge as it was a pressing issue affecting the students’ daily routines. With the new furniture, students no longer have to queue or stand while eating, allowing for a more organized dining experience conducive to learning table manners.
Commending WASSOSA 1978 for their support, Dr Ofori emphasized that the donation would enhance students’ time management skills, enabling them to participate in classes and school activities promptly. The Chairman of WASSOSA 1978, Mr Seth Boyd Laryea, reiterated the group’s commitment to enhancing academic standards at the school, mentioning that the inauguration of the dining hall furniture was just one of the many ways they were supporting the institution.
While the group had previously sponsored events like the school’s 70th Speech and Prize Giving Day, Mr Laryea acknowledged that more support was needed to address the ongoing challenges at WASHS. He stressed the importance of continued support from alumni, stating that government resources alone are insufficient to address all the issues schools face in the country.
Mr Laryea urged the WASSOSA umbrella body to encourage individual year groups to assist WASHS in improving teaching and learning conditions, as well as the students’ overall well-being. By sustaining their support, alumni can play a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience for current students and contributing to the school’s overall development.
In conclusion, the donation of dining hall furniture by WASSOSA 1978 demonstrates the strong bond between alumni and their alma mater. Through their support, the group is not only addressing immediate needs at the school but also promoting a conducive learning environment for present and future students.
