The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, recently inaugurated the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, marking it as the main venue for the upcoming 13th edition of the African Games. The stadium, boasting a capacity of 10,000 seats and equipped with a modern Mundo track for athletics, will play host to the track and field events during the games. Additionally, the facility features a standard rugby field, which the Vice President also officially opened.

This monumental event is expected to bring together close to 13,000 elite athletes, sports technocrats, technicians, and officials from approximately 54 African countries, along with a dedicated team of volunteers, all converging in Accra for the two-week-long competition. The anticipation surrounding the games is palpable as preparations gear up for the grand event.

Addressing the audience at the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Bawumia commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for spearheading the enhancement of sporting facilities across the nation, including the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. He lauded the president’s vision, attributing the construction of world-class facilities to his unwavering commitment to sports development in Ghana.

The Vice President acknowledged the challenges encountered during the construction phase but emphasized that the benefits would be immediate and substantial. He highlighted the transformative impact of these newly established facilities, citing examples such as the improved infrastructure in previously underdeveloped areas, including the Greater Accra Region, as a result of the Borteyman Sports Complex. Dr. Bawumia predicted a ripple effect on the social, recreational, and economic landscape, fostering growth and prosperity in the region.

In alignment with the government’s strategic focus on sports development for socio-economic advancement, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, emphasized the significance of substantial investments in sporting infrastructure. These strategic investments aim to propel Ghana towards holistic sports development, contributing to the overarching goal of socio-economic progress.

The African Games are scheduled to officially commence on March 8, culminating on March 23. Notably, the badminton event will kick off earlier on March 3, setting the stage for the grand opening ceremony and the subsequent weeks of exhilarating sporting action.

In conclusion, the commissioning of the University of Ghana Sports Stadium signifies a significant milestone in Ghana’s sporting landscape, underscoring the nation’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports. The upcoming African Games promise to be a display of athleticism, camaraderie, and sportsmanship, uniting athletes and enthusiasts from diverse African countries in a celebration of sporting prowess and unity.
