Dr. Ayamba was among the 103 Ph.D. graduates who stood out at the 56th congregation at the University of Cape Coast. The congregation, held from Tuesday, January 23 to Friday, January 26, witnessed a total of 18,539 undergraduate and postgraduate students graduate from UCC. Dr. Ayamba’s exceptional achievement was recognized with the Special Chancellor’s Award of US $2,000, which was presented by the Chancellor of the university, Sir Sam Jonah. Dr. Ayamba, who lost his sight in a 1995 accident, overcame this setback to successfully complete his academic journey.
According to an interview with Graphic Online, Dr. Ayamba recounted that he lost his vision in an accident and had to undergo his ordinary-level studies in braille at the Presbyterian Training College in Akropong. Following rehabilitation at the School of the Blind in Akropong, he continued his education, completing his first degree in English and Psychology in 2004 at UCC after completing Teachers Training College in 1999.
During this time, he was assigned to teach at the Junior High School in Ntonso for two years before enrolling at UCC in 2001. After his degree, he taught English at the Mampong Technical College of Education before returning to UCC for his Master of Philosophy in Guidance and Counseling. He pursued his doctoral studies in Guidance and Counseling at UCC, reflecting a journey marked by prayers and determination.
Dr. Ayamba emphasized the importance of education for children with disabilities and encouraged parents to prioritize their education. He highlighted the presence of numerous disability schools in Ghana and urged entities dedicated to aiding the physically challenged to provide guidance and support for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
The award and recognition received by Dr. Ayamba serve as an inspiration not only for individuals with disabilities but for all students who face challenges in their academic journey. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination in overcoming adversity.
