Telecel, a prominent telecommunications brand in Africa, has recently launched in Ghana with the goal of providing innovative telecommunications solutions to connect and empower customers and communities across the country. In February 2023, Telecel Group acquired 70% of Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTCL), making it the majority shareholder with the government of Ghana holding the remaining 30% shares.
The brand was officially introduced to employees at the Accra International Conference Centre during an event named Telecel Day. The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, unveiled the Telecel brand at the Labadi Beach Hotel in the presence of various stakeholders including government officials, media, industry leaders, and customers. Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of telecommunications in today’s economy, highlighting its role in connecting people and empowering communities.
He mentioned, “Access to reliable communication is essential for socioeconomic development and plays a crucial role in Ghana’s digitization agenda.” The Vice President commended Telecel Group for investing in Ghana and attributed it to the conducive business environment created by the government under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The final rebranding event took place at the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout and was attended by traditional leaders and the general public.
CEO of Telecel Group, Moh Damush, expressed excitement about the launch of the Telecel brand in Ghana, marking a significant milestone for the company. He emphasized Telecel’s commitment to providing positive disruption, advancement, and innovation in Ghana. Telecel’s vision is to lead Africa’s digital revolution by connecting communities through sustainable and locally developed innovative connectivity methods.
In Ghana, Telecel aims to expand its network coverage significantly, planning to set up 2500 4G sites within three years and achieve 100% satellite-to-mobile connectivity for nationwide access. CEO of Telecel Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai, stated that the company has evolved from offering basic telecommunication services to pioneering digital solutions across Ghana. The evolution was driven by innovation, commitment to excellence, and the vision to create a connected and empowered Ghana.
With the rebranding, subsidiaries of the company have also changed to Telecel Cash and Telecel Foundation. All operations have transitioned to Telecel, and customers will continue to enjoy existing services on their 020 and 050 numbers. Telecel’s focus on providing innovative solutions and expanding network coverage is set to bring about technological advancements that will benefit communities and contribute to the growth of Ghana.
