In order to prepare for the upcoming rainy season and reduce the likelihood of flooding, the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has instructed the Ghana Hydrological Authority to accelerate drainage projects throughout the country.
This directive aims to minimize the potential impact of heavy rainfall on communities situated in flood-prone areas of Ghana. The Minister emphasized the importance of expediting the construction of drainage systems to ensure they are completed on time or even ahead of schedule.
During an inspection of ongoing dredging activities on the Odaw River Basin and flood mitigation measures in communities such as Alogboshie, Kasoa-Iron City, and Weija, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah highlighted the urgency of the work being done. He was accompanied by key officials from the Ministry and its agencies, including Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfoh and Dr. John Kisi.
Several projects under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) and the Ghana Hydrological Authority are currently underway to address flooding issues, with a strong focus on the capital city, Accra.
The government’s National Flood Control Programme (NFCP) has allocated approximately GH¢450 million towards drainage and desilting works in the Greater Accra Region. Dredge Masters have been tasked with removing solid waste materials from the Odaw River, with ongoing construction of storm drains in various communities as part of GARID’s Community Upgrade Programme.
Inspecting construction sites in Alogboshie, Kasoa-Iron City, and Weija, the Minister was briefed on the progress of storm drain projects and the government’s efforts to reduce flood risks in Accra, particularly after the June 3rd flood disaster. A particular focus was placed on engaging with affected persons to ensure they are adequately compensated during ongoing construction works.
Dr. Sarfoh and Dr. Kissi highlighted the importance of regular maintenance and desilting of drainage systems once completed to ensure their effectiveness in preventing flooding. Mr. Oppong Nkrumah underscored the need for beneficiary assemblies to take responsibility for maintenance and to ensure residents benefit fully from the investments made in drainage infrastructure.
Overall, the Minister stressed the importance of completing these projects efficiently and effectively to minimize the risks associated with flooding in Ghana. The government’s commitment to addressing flooding issues and improving drainage infrastructure reflects its dedication to protecting communities and mitigating the impact of heavy rains during the upcoming rainy season.
