The Safety and Security Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has strongly condemned the acts of violence that took place during the Ghana Premier League (GPL) match between Asante Kotoko and Nations FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The committee expressed its concern about the unacceptable and unsportsmanlike incidents that have occurred at various match venues recently, particularly at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Asante Kotoko suffered a 1-0 defeat to Nations FC, marking their seventh consecutive loss in their past seven appearances in the league. Their recent losses include defeats against Karela United, ASEC Mimosa, Heart of Lions, Accra Lions, Aduana Stars, and Nations FC. This poor run of form has raised concerns within the club and among fans.
The committee, led by Chairperson DCOP Lydia Donkor, specifically mentioned the brazen attack on match officials during the Asante Kotoko vs Nations FC game. Referee James Taylor and his two assistants, Kwesi Brobbey and Roland Addy, along with fourth official Hasim Yakubu, were reportedly subjected to abuse and physical attacks by fans at the stadium. The committee emphasized that such acts of misconduct will not be tolerated and vowed to work with the Police and other stakeholders to address hooliganism and restore order at match venues.
Efforts are already underway to identify and hold accountable the individuals responsible for the violent incidents. The committee has stated that four suspects have been identified and are expected to cooperate with the Police in their investigations. It reiterated that those causing disturbances at match venues will not be allowed to tarnish the image of the game, and the FA is committed to eradicating violence from Ghana Football.
In addition, the committee reminded clubs, team officials, and supporters of their responsibilities before, during, and after matches. They pledged to enforce compliance with regulations and ensure a safe environment for players, match officials, and all individuals associated with the game. The committee is collaborating with the Kumasi Regional Police Command to address the issues of violence and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
Moving forward, the FA and the Safety and Security Committee are focused on eliminating violence from football matches and creating a positive and safe environment for all stakeholders. They are committed to upholding the integrity of the game and promoting a culture of respect and sportsmanship within the Ghanaian football community.
