Ghana Fund has made a significant move towards establishing a national airline by initiating the process to order fifty Diamond DA-62 aircraft. This decision was made during the Ghana Fund’s Trade Mission to Austria, marking a new chapter for the Ghanaian aviation industry. The goal is to kick-start a “members only” Ghanaian Airlines service that will not only cater to domestic flights but also extend its footprint to West and Central African countries.
The plan is to incorporate 50 Diamond DA-62 light aircraft into the fleet, with the first five expected to be delivered before the end of 2024. The remaining 45 aircraft will follow over the next two years, alongside 200 piston engine light aircraft and 60 Cessna Caravans. These aircraft choices were carefully selected based on their ability to operate from remote airstrips, providing access to aviation services for communities without airports in Ghana.
Dr. Noskim Atidigah, the President of Ghana Fund, emphasized the importance of allowing these underserved communities to enjoy the convenience of air travel. However, access to the “Members Only” service will be restricted to individuals in good standing within the club. While the service will not initially enter the commercial aviation space, it will be branded as “Ghanaian Airlines” and maintain this identity as it expands and introduces larger commercial airliners in the future.
Looking ahead, high-level delegations led by the President of Ghana Fund will visit Australia, the USA, and Europe to ensure timely deliveries and keep the project on track. The optimism surrounding the establishment of a national airline is high, with the current contributions paving the way for a promising future in the aviation sector.
In conclusion, the decision to order fifty Diamond DA-62 aircraft signifies a significant step towards the establishment of a national airline in Ghana. The prospect of delivering aviation services to underserved communities and expanding the footprint to other African countries demonstrates a commitment to growth and development in the aviation industry. With strategic planning and careful execution, the vision of a thriving Ghanaian Airlines service is well within reach.
