The 13th Africa Games Accra 2023 was officially opened by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in a lively ceremony that emphasized the power of sports. The event took place at the University of Ghana Stadium and was attended by Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Local Organising Committee Chairman, Dr Kweku Ofosu Asare, as well as other dignitaries and hundreds of fans.
The opening ceremony featured performances by music icons such as King Promise, Kamo Mphel, Pat Thomas, Ebo Taylor, and Shatta Wale. Spectators, guests, and athletes were treated to a memorable show.
President Akufo-Addo, in his address, highlighted the unifying power of sports and encouraged participants to showcase Africa’s talent and inspire others through their efforts. He urged athletes to compete fairly and strive for excellence.
Mustapha Ussif expressed Ghana’s commitment to hosting a historic competition and thanked President Akufo-Addo for his support in creating world-class sports infrastructure for the event. The African Games are scheduled to take place from March 8-23, with events spread across various venues including the University of Ghana Stadium and Borteyman Sports Complex.
The games will feature 29 sports disciplines, with nearly 500 athletes representing Team Ghana in events like arm wrestling, athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, and more. The venues for the games include the Accra International Conference Centre, Trust Sports Emporium, Laboma Beach, Alisa Hotel, and several others.
Female weightlifter, Winnifred Ntumi, made history by winning Ghana’s first medals in weightlifting, securing two silver medals and a gold medal in the women’s 49kg snatch and clean and jerk competitions. Swimmer Abeiku Jackson also brought home a medal for Ghana in the 50m butterfly event.
The African Games Accra 2023 aims to promote unity, excellence, and talent across the continent through sports. The event provides a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and inspire others while competing in a fair and competitive environment. With the support of the government and the enthusiasm of participants and spectators, the games are set to be a thrilling celebration of African sporting excellence.
