The Pomposo Royals have secured their second Ashanti Region Senior Women’s T20 Cricket League title by finishing at the top of the table with eight points. The league consisted of six Senior Women’s teams competing at the KNUST Obuasi Cricket Oval in a single round-robin format.
Led by Captain Rhyda Ofori Amanfo, who is also the captain of the senior women’s national team, the Pomposo Royals managed to draw their last game against Tutuka Queens. Despite this draw, the Royals played well and controlled the game, ultimately securing the title.
In their last game, the Pomposo Royals batted first and managed to restrict the Tutuka Queens in the second innings. The Queens’ captain Rozabel Asumadu was dismissed before the end of the match. Beatrice Oduro tried to keep things under control for the Queens but eventually lost her partners and was bowled on the last ball by Ernestina Tagoe as they were 1 run short of victory.
This victory marks the second league title for the Pomposo Royals, having previously won in November 2021. In the 2022 edition, they lost to the Royal Batters. In other matches, Wawasi Elites lost to White Hawks in a closely contested game, with the White Hawks emerging victorious by three wickets.
The match between Central Divas and defending champions Royal Batters was rained off, resulting in shared points. The President of the Obuasi Sports Club, Mr. John Williams, along with the senior women’s national team coach Obed Harvey, presented the trophy to Rhyda Ofori Amanfo and congratulated her team on their achievement.
Individual awards were also given out, with Rhyda receiving the Best Batter accolade for scoring 71 runs in four innings with an average of 17 runs. Elizabeth Annor of Royal Batters was named the Best Fielder, while Rashidatu Salia of Wawasi Elites took home both the Best Bowler (10 wickets in 5 matches) and Player of the Season awards.
The new club Central Divas maintained their second spot in the league standings with six points, followed by White Hawks with five points. Tutuka Queens and Royal Batters settled for fourth and fifth place respectively, each earning four points, while Wawasi Elites finished at the bottom with three points.
With the completion of the third season, the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) aims to elevate the intensity of women’s cricket in Ghana to compete with top teams in Africa. The league has showcased the talent and potential of women’s cricket in the region, paving the way for further growth and development in the sport.
