The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced that a resettlement project will take place over the next six months. He emphasized that the construction of new homes for resettlement will require about six months to make significant progress, and urged patience from the community members as the project unfolds. The government is starting with about a hundred homes and will finalize the number after validation.
According to data from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), over 5,200 households in 19 districts along the Volta River in the Volta, Eastern, Greater Accra, and Oti Regions were impacted by floods. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has allocated GHS80 million for the rehabilitation of the affected communities, demonstrating the government’s commitment to assisting those in need.
During the 67th Independence Day event, President Akufo-Addo reiterated the government’s dedication to aiding the recovery and revitalization of the affected areas. The allocation of funds is part of a strategic effort to mitigate the challenges faced by communities and enhance overall resilience.
The President highlighted the government’s support for victims of extensive flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, which was necessary to ensure the dam’s structural integrity. The government has set aside GH¢220 million in the 2024 budget, with GH¢80 million already released by the Ministry of Finance to support ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
Residents of the affected communities were displaced when water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams was spilled by the Volta River Authority. This led to the destruction of homes, disruption of livelihoods, and the collapse of businesses. The government’s response includes not only financial support but also the construction of new homes for resettlement to help those affected rebuild their lives.
The resettlement project is a crucial step in the recovery process for communities impacted by the floods along the Volta River. Through funding and support from the government, affected individuals and families will have the opportunity to start anew and rebuild their lives in safer and more secure environments. The commitment shown by the government towards the rehabilitation efforts underscores the importance of community resilience and solidarity in times of crisis.
In conclusion, the government’s efforts to provide assistance and support to those affected by the floods demonstrate a commitment to the well-being and recovery of all citizens. By prioritizing the resettlement project and allocating funds for rehabilitation, the government is taking proactive steps to address the challenges faced by communities and promote sustainable recovery. The collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and community members will be essential in ensuring the success of the resettlement project and the long-term resilience of the affected areas.
