Dr. Abdul-Hamid, the President of the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA), recently spoke at the Egypt Energy Show in Cairo, shedding light on Ghana’s environmentally conscious fuel policies. He attributed these policies to the advocacy efforts of civil society organizations and the general public. Their calls for decarbonization objectives and environmental protection led to a significant shift in Ghana’s fuel policies, particularly in reducing Sulphur content.
One of the key initiatives highlighted by Dr. Abdul-Hamid is Ghana’s efforts to enhance clean cooking across the nation. This involves transforming the LPG distribution model to address safety concerns and environmental factors. The introduction of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) aims to improve access to LPG while promoting safety. Exchange points are being constructed nationwide to facilitate this transition.
Furthermore, Ghana has set ambitious targets for its LPG for Development Program, aiming for a 50 percent penetration of LPG in households by 2030. To support this goal, the government is providing free LPG cylinders to impoverished rural households. This initiative addresses the initial challenges faced by many in affording cylinders and cookstoves, which often led to a reliance on wood fuels.
In a move towards sustainable transportation, the government has procured 100 electric-powered buses for the Metro Mass Transit Limited. This demonstrates a commitment to the energy transition agenda and aligns with efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the government is encouraging state institutions to embrace solar power, offering incentives to private individuals seeking to solar-power their establishments.
Dr. Abdul-Hamid also commended the freedom of speech in Ghana and acknowledged the pivotal role of civil society organizations and the public in steering the nation towards cleaner energy practices. Ghana’s progress in environmentally friendly fuel, LPG distribution, and sustainable energy policies not only sets an example in the sub-region but also contributes to a global push for cleaner and more sustainable energy practices.
Overall, Ghana’s efforts to promote clean energy and environmentally friendly policies reflect a commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing sustainability. By engaging with stakeholders and implementing innovative initiatives, Ghana is making strides towards a cleaner and greener future for its citizens.
