The Majority caucus in Parliament has firmly denied reports of any changes in its leadership. The caucus stated that it has no plans to make any alterations to its front bench and urged the public to disregard the rumors.
There were widespread rumors on Monday suggesting that the New Patriotic Party had made changes to its leadership in preparation for the 2024 election campaign. According to the rumors, the Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, was expected to be replaced by his deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu. Additionally, it was rumored that Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, would serve as the deputy caucus leader, and Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon, would be promoted to Chief Whip. Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa, and Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, MP for Sefwi Akontombra, were also rumored to be in line for the positions of first and deputy whips, respectively.
However, these reports were deemed false by the First Deputy Speaker and MP for Bekwai, Joseph Osei Owusu. He emphasized that the Majority caucus has not made any changes to its leadership and has no intentions of doing so. He also highlighted that, according to the Standing Orders of the House, it is the caucus’s responsibility to select its leadership and not the party’s duty to impose leadership on them.
Osei Owusu expressed the caucus’s confidence in the leadership of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and assured that the status quo would be maintained. He also mentioned that the caucus was in the process of arranging a replacement for its first Deputy Whip and MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, who has been nominated as Minister designate for Sanitation and Water Resources.
In conclusion, Osei Owusu reiterated that the leadership of the Majority caucus has not undergone any changes, and there are no plans to effect any changes. The caucus remains committed to its current leadership and is focused on internal arrangements to fill any vacant positions. It is important to note that these statements were reported by Julius Yao Petetsi.
