The decision to remove the supporters’ representation on the board of Accra Hearts of Oak was explained by the Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV during the club’s 6th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Civil Service Auditorium. He mentioned that the presence of a supporters’ representation on the board was not proving to be useful, leading to its removal from the new board structure.
The new 10-man Board of Directors was unanimously constituted at the meeting, excluding the fans’ slot on the board. This move raised some concerns among the shareholders, to which Togbe Afede XIV responded by explaining that the previous board had created the slot for the National Chapters Committee (NCC) chairman in an attempt to bring the club closer to the fans. However, this decision did not serve its intended purpose.
In place of the fans’ representation on the board, the club has established a Supporters Liaison Office. Togbe Afede XIV emphasized that this office would facilitate continuous dialogue with the fans, highlighting the importance of their role in the club. He mentioned that the club needs the fans just as much as the board does, and the creation of the office is a stronger statement of the club’s commitment to working with the fans.
The inclusion of various members on the board, such as the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, Vincent Sowah Odotei, and Madam Ivy Heward-Mills, alongside new additions like Ing. Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Prof. Agyemang Badu Akosa, Akwasi Agyeman, and Delali Anku-Adiamah, the club’s Managing Director, signifies a diverse group of individuals responsible for running the affairs of the club.
In conclusion, the decision to remove the supporters’ representation on the board of Accra Hearts of Oak was based on the belief that establishing a Supporters Liaison Office would be a more effective way to engage with the fans. This move aligns with FIFA’s requirement for clubs participating in the CAF Super League and aims to develop the fan base while maintaining open communication between the board and the fan base. The reconstitution of the board reflects a commitment to effective governance and collaboration with all stakeholders involved in driving the club’s success.
