The Minority in Ghana is calling for urgent action to address power outages that are affecting healthcare facilities in the country. The call comes as reports emerge of power outages impacting various parts of Ghana, including healthcare facilities that heavily rely on electricity to power medical equipment, lighting, and other essential services.
Hon. Akandoh, a member of the Minority, highlighted the detrimental impact of these power outages on healthcare delivery. He emphasized that the outages pose significant risks to patients’ lives and compromise the effectiveness of medical treatment. In response to these challenges, the Minority is urging the Ministry of Energy and relevant agencies to exempt all health facilities nationwide from the current unannounced and unscheduled load shedding and power outages.
Additionally, the Minority is calling on the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to audit all alternate power supply systems within health facilities. This audit will determine the capacity and reliability of existing systems in handling electricity disruptions. If the current systems are found to be inadequate, the procurement of emergency power supply systems should be prioritized to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.
The Minority’s plea aligns with the concerns raised by healthcare professionals and stakeholders regarding the adverse effects of load shedding on the healthcare sector. Many healthcare facilities have reported challenges in providing adequate care and treatment to patients due to power interruptions. To address these challenges, the Minority is urging the government to take immediate action to exempt all health facilities from load shedding and ensure a consistent electricity supply to support healthcare services.
Healthcare professionals have emphasized the critical need for reliable power supply in healthcare facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of patients. Without stable electricity, medical equipment cannot function effectively, and essential services are interrupted, putting patients at risk. The current power outages are exacerbating an already strained healthcare system, making it difficult for healthcare providers to deliver quality care to those in need.
The Minority’s call for action is a crucial step in protecting the lives and health of Ghanaian citizens. By exempting health facilities from power outages and ensuring consistent electricity supply, the government can support healthcare providers in delivering essential services to the population. It is essential that all stakeholders work together to address these challenges and prioritize the well-being of patients in healthcare facilities across Ghana.
