The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority caucus in parliament has extended their well-wishes to Team Ghana ahead of the official opening ceremony of the 13th edition of the All-African Games. Mr. Kobena Mensah Woyome, Ranking Committee Member on Youth, Sports, and Culture, emphasized the importance of the team seizing the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics Games.
In a statement, Mr. Woyome expressed, “On the eve of the official opening of the Games, we wish Team Ghana the best, recognizing the significance of the hosting and organization of this event in advancing our goals towards African unity. The hosting of an Olympic Games should be our next target in the foreseeable future.”
The NDC Minority Caucus also emphasized the efforts Ghana had made to secure the right to host the 13th edition of the All-African Games. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts, the country ultimately succeeded in securing the hosting rights through a unanimous decision following a spirited competition with Egypt during the Technical Committee on Youth, Culture, and Sports Meeting in Algiers.
Ghana’s previous bid to host the 12th edition was unsuccessful, losing to Morocco despite efforts by former Minister of Youth and Sports, the late Major (rtd.), Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, who engaged a consultant as instructed by former President John Dramani Mahama. However, the revised bid for the 13th edition was resubmitted to the AU Secretariat in 2016 under the leadership of Mr. Isaac Asiamah, who assumed the role of Minister of Youth and Sports after the 2016 general election.
The NDC Minority Caucus commended Team Ghana for their dedication and hard work leading up to the All-African Games, urging them to make the most of this opportunity to showcase their talent and represent the country with pride. The caucus reiterated their support for the team and encouraged them to strive for success, both at the All-African Games and in their pursuit of qualifying for the Olympics.
As the official opening ceremony approaches, Team Ghana can count on the backing of the NDC Minority Caucus and the nation as a whole. The hosting of the All-African Games presents a significant opportunity for Ghana to shine on the continental stage and further strengthen ties with other African nations through sportsmanship and camaraderie. The caucus remains optimistic about the future of Ghanaian sports and looks forward to witnessing the success of Team Ghana in the upcoming competitions.
In conclusion, the NDC Minority Caucus sends their best wishes to Team Ghana as they embark on this exciting journey at the All-African Games. With determination, perseverance, and unity, the team has the potential to achieve great success and bring honor to Ghana on the international sporting stage.
