Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a former Minister for Education and the first-ever female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, has been named as the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2020 presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s nomination comes after much speculation and anticipation, with names like Julius Debrah, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Eric Opoku, and Nathan Kofi Boakye rumored to be considered for the position.
Born in Cape Coast in 1951, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang had a rich educational background, attending schools like Aburi Girls and Wesley Girls High School before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Cape Coast. She furthered her studies in Canada, earning a PhD in English literature from York University before returning to Ghana to teach at her alma mater for over 30 years.
During her tenure as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang spearheaded various initiatives to improve the quality of education in Ghana. Under her leadership, the ministry reduced teacher absenteeism, established Special Schools in Colleges of Education, introduced the progressively Free SHS program, and implemented the BECE Private Candidates Policy. These policies and infrastructural developments led to an overall improvement in the quality of education at all levels during the Mahama administration.
Outside of her political and academic roles, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has been a mentor and inspiration to thousands of students, known for her kindness, intelligence, and integrity. She also serves as the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa in Zimbabwe and is the President and Board Chairperson of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), where she has helped raise funds to improve educational impact in Africa.
The nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as John Mahama’s running mate is seen as a significant move towards promoting gender diversity and representation in political leadership. Her wealth of experience in education, coupled with her dedication to empowering women and improving educational opportunities, makes her a strong candidate for the role.
The General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, confirmed that the nomination process was conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution. A meeting with the party’s Council of Elders is scheduled to discuss and deliberate on the nomination, showcasing a transparent and inclusive decision-making process within the party.
