The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Ghana Immigration Service and other security agencies to combat emerging threats, especially at the country’s borders. The Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the GAF, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, emphasized the importance of working together to ensure the nation’s security.
During a visit to the Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Kwame Asuah Takyi in Accra, Lieutenant General Oppong-Peprah highlighted the need for security agencies to join forces in light of the rising threat of terrorism in the Sahel region. He stressed the importance of addressing threats along the borders to maintain peace and security in Ghana.
In the face of terrorist threats, quick response mechanisms are crucial. Lieutenant General Oppong-Peprah emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent terrorism from infiltrating the country’s borders. He expressed his commitment to strengthening cooperation between the GAF and other security agencies, including the GIS, to safeguard citizens and secure the nation.
Comptroller General Kwame Asuah Takyi acknowledged the vital role of the GIS in national security and the longstanding collaboration with the GAF. The partnership dates back to the 1970s when the Immigration Department worked closely with the GAF’s bodyguard unit, leading to joint training programs for border patrol officers.
The successful joint operations between the GAF and the GIS in the past, such as Operation Motherland and Operation Calm Life, demonstrated the effectiveness of their collaboration. Mr. Takyi highlighted the need to leverage strengths in border security, intelligence sharing, and joint operations to address challenges posed by migration and cross-border activities.
The visit by the CDS provided an opportunity to showcase GIS capabilities and explore avenues for further collaboration. Emphasis was placed on enhancing border security, intelligence sharing, and joint operations to address security challenges effectively.
The CDS was accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Major General Prince Osei-Owusu, Deputy Chief of Staff of Operations and Training, Major General Joseph Aphour, and other officials. The GIS Boss and Deputy Comptroller-Generals received the CDS and his team at the GIS Headquarters.
