Ghana: La Dadekotopon MP launches 2nd ‘Nye Awo Kpakpa’ football tourney

The ‘Nye Awo Kpakpa’ community football tournament, now in its second edition, has officially begun in La, with a total of 24 teams slated to compete for the championship title. Among the teams participating are La Yaoshua, Girls School, A.U Village, Caterpillar, Roman, Adjeman Parliament, Adjeman, Kaajanor, His Majesty, Cantonment, Kojo Sardine, Bulemi, Green Court, Gigolo, Burma Camp, and Town Park. Additionally, traditional teams like East La, Gormli, Court, Salem Park, Aviation, Kakaramadu, Ako Adjei Park, and Centre have been granted exemption from the knockout stage and will face off against the eight winners.

The tournament, spanning 23 weeks, kicked off at the McDan Park with Girls School securing a 3-0 victory over La Yaoshua. Subsequent fixtures at the La Salem Park saw exciting matchups such as A.U Village versus Adjeman Parliament, Caterpillar against Adjeman, Roman versus Kaajanor, Cantonment versus Town Park, His Majesty versus Kojo Sardine, Bulemi against Gigolo, and Burma Camp taking on Green Court.

The brainchild behind this initiative, Ms Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for the La Dadekotopon area, emphasized the importance of sports in fostering unity and camaraderie among communities. She expressed her belief in the power of sports to transcend differences and bring people together to support one another in achieving their goals. As a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Sports, Youth, and Culture, Ms Sowah extended her gratitude to sponsors such as the Turkish Ambassador, Mr Huseyin Gungor, and a representative of the French Ambassador for their support towards the tournament.

Each participating team is set to receive an appearance fee, jerseys, and footballs, with the overall winner clinching a trophy, an undisclosed cash prize, and additional prizes for outstanding players such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), the leading goal scorer, and the best goalkeeper. This initiative aims not only to promote sportsmanship but also to instill a sense of community pride and unity among the residents of La.
