The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ejisu is gearing up for the election of a new Parliamentary Candidate following the passing of Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy Finance Minister, John Ampontuah Kumah. As the nomination period closes on Thursday, April 4, several aspirants have already picked up their nomination forms.
One of the notable aspirants is Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, a second vice chairman of the NPP in Ejisu, who is vying for the position alongside Helena Mensah. Other aspirants include Lawyer Portia Baffoe Abronye, Dr Evans Duah, Madam Pokuaa Boitey, and Klinsman Karikari Mensah. All the aspirants are optimistic about their chances of making it onto the ballot.
The election of a new Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2024. The NPP has set clear guidelines for prospective parliamentary candidates, stating that they can purchase and submit their nomination forms from April 2 to April 4, 2024, at the constituency party office.
To become an aspiring parliamentary candidate, one must pay a non-refundable application fee of GHȼ3,000 in a banker’s draft payable to the NPP National Headquarters in Accra. In addition, an aspiring candidate must also pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHȼ35,000 in a banker’s draft to the NPP National Headquarters.
However, there is a provision for Women, Youth (individuals aged between 18 and 40 years), and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) to receive a 50% discount on the filing fees. This reduces their non-refundable filing fee to GHȼ17,500, making it more accessible for candidates from these underrepresented groups to participate in the election process.
The late John Kumah, the former MP and Deputy Finance Minister, has left a void in the constituency that these aspirants are vying to fill. The upcoming election will not only determine the next Parliamentary Candidate but also serve as a reflection of the party’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity in its candidate selection process.
As the NPP prepares for this important election, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the nomination process. By setting clear guidelines and providing opportunities for a diverse range of candidates to participate, the NPP is working towards a more inclusive and representative political landscape in Ejisu.
Overall, the election of a new Parliamentary Candidate in Ejisu represents an opportunity for the NPP to strengthen its democratic processes and showcase its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the party. As the nomination period comes to a close and the election date approaches, all eyes will be on the aspiring candidates vying to carry on the legacy of the late John Ampontuah Kumah.
