The Minister disclosed that the reason behind the accident involving Ghana’s newly imported train was due to the Kia truck driver parking on the railway tracks. Unfortunately, by the time the train approached, it was too late to stop, resulting in a collision. This incident occurred during a test run on the Tema-Mpakadan railway route on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Despite the impact, there were no casualties reported from the accident. The passengers and inspectors aboard the train all escaped unharmed. The Minister, Peter Amewu, reassured that there were no injuries sustained by anyone on board, and they were currently evaluating the damage caused to the train.

According to the Minister, the train remains in good condition overall, with only some minor damage seen in its frontal area. He mentioned, “Technically, I would say the train is still in very good form. Nothing in terms of electrical or the engine has been affected, except the front that got slightly damaged.”

This incident occurred shortly after the arrival of the first batch of trains assembled in Poland at the Tema Port. The purpose of these new trains is to enhance railway transportation in Ghana. The country is anticipating a total of 12 state-of-the-art trains from Poland, with operations expected to commence in May.

The Minister commented further on the situation, stating, “The Kia driver himself has reported himself to the police station, but the conduct of the driver as of now cannot be well explained.” The investigation is ongoing to understand the circumstances leading to the truck being parked on the railway tracks, causing the collision with the train.

Despite the setback, Ghana is optimistic about improving its railway infrastructure with the introduction of these new trains. The government is committed to enhancing transportation services and connectivity within the country for the benefit of its citizens.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and caution when operating on railway tracks. It highlights the need for vigilance and adherence to regulations to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future. With proper training and awareness, similar incidents can be avoided, ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and the general public.

In conclusion, while the accident involving Ghana’s new train was a concerning event, the government remains focused on its goal of improving railway transportation in the country. The incident will serve as a learning experience to implement better safety measures and precautions moving forward.
