The Jospong Group of Companies achieved a significant milestone by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lagos State Government to address waste recycling, treatment, and processing. The agreement, attended by members of the House of Assembly, local waste collection associations, and state officials, signifies a commitment to improving sanitation services in Lagos.
Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, emphasized the importance of collaboration and capacity building in waste management. The Group plans to introduce cutting-edge technology, establish a material recovery facility, mobile transfer loading stations, and repurpose the current Olusosun landfill to reduce waste volume. These initiatives aim to enhance environmental sanitation, boost carbon ratings, and generate funds for sustainable infrastructure development in Lagos.
Dr. Agyepong expressed confidence in the partnership’s potential to establish a positive relationship between the Jospong Group and various Nigerian states. He highlighted the Group’s track record of providing sustainable solutions in waste management and its commitment to improving the livelihoods of the Nigerian youth.
The Jospong Group’s focus on environmentally friendly solutions includes the establishment of 58 sustainable sanitation infrastructures and integrated recycling and compost plants. These initiatives have contributed to waste reduction, agricultural sector development, and cleaner communities in Nigeria.
While the Group is not directly involved in waste collection, it aims to support downstream operators with equipment and resources to enhance their efficiency. Collaboration with the Lagos State Government’s waste management agencies, such as LAWMA and LSWMO, will ensure a coordinated approach to addressing waste challenges.
Mr. Tukunbo Wahab, Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, praised the Jospong Group for its leadership in waste management in Africa. The State’s decision to engage the Group reflects a commitment to addressing complex waste management issues and turning waste into valuable resources.
The Public Private Partnership with the Jospong Group is geared towards converting waste into wealth, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering a cleaner and greener Lagos. The agreement aims to leverage the Group’s expertise to manage waste effectively and create a conducive environment for private sector involvement in waste management.
The collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria, as highlighted by Mrs. Samata Gifty Bukari, the Consul General of Ghana to Lagos, underscores the importance of regional cooperation in improving sanitation and strengthening diplomatic ties. The MoU between the Jospong Group and the Lagos State Government is a step towards achieving these objectives and contributing to the overall development and sustainability of waste management practices in the region.
