Former Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed his commitment to prioritize the development of mining communities in Ghana during his upcoming term. Speaking to chiefs, elders, and residents of Obuasi, Mahama highlighted the disparity between the thriving mining communities globally and the lack of development in Ghana’s mining areas.
He emphasized that mining communities around the world are typically well-developed, benefiting from the proceeds of the mines. However, he noted that this is not the case for Ghana. Mahama pledged to work with local leaders, known as Nananom, to ensure that the mining proceeds are used to develop and uplift communities like Obuasi.
Mahama drew a comparison between Obuasi and Johannesburg, pointing out the stark contrast in development despite both cities being mining communities. He acknowledged that while Johannesburg is seeing significant development, the same cannot be said for Obuasi. Mahama’s vision is to work with Nananom to use a portion of the mining proceeds to bring about development in Obuasi, ensuring that the community benefits from the resources in the long term.
Furthermore, Mahama emphasized the importance of ensuring that the benefits from the mines are sustainable. He expressed the need for Obuasi to benefit from its gold resources even after the gold is no longer available, highlighting the long-term impact that mining can have on a community’s development.
Mahama’s commitment to prioritizing the development of mining communities in Ghana reflects his dedication to addressing the disparities and ensuring that the proceeds from the mines contribute to sustainable and lasting development. With a focus on collaboration with local leaders and a vision for long-term impact, Mahama aims to bring positive change to communities like Obuasi during his upcoming term.
