The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, recently launched the Smart Schools Project, which aims to provide one tablet each to approximately 1.3 million students. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Education with assistance from the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schools (CENDELOS), seeks to equip students in Ghana with the necessary technological skills and knowledge for the future.
In addition to receiving a tablet, students will benefit from the construction of 100 Smart Schools across all 16 regions of the country. These schools will offer a modern learning environment and digital training to enhance the educational experience for students. President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the Smart Schools Project aligns with the government’s commitment to improving the free senior high school program and utilizing technological advancements to prepare students for global competition.
The President highlighted that the project is in line with the education for sustainable development agenda outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. Quality education is seen as a crucial driver for achieving all 17 SDGs, and the Smart Schools Project aims to enhance the performance of students and better prepare them for higher education and future careers.
The Smart Schools Project will provide students with electronic tablets equipped with comprehensive teaching and learning management systems. These digital tools will facilitate research, teaching, and learning, deepening the application of digitalization in the educational sector. The project also includes the construction of modern infrastructure to facilitate e-learning and digitalization at the secondary school level.
President Akufo-Addo outlined plans to build 100 smart schools across the country, with the first 30 expected to be completed by the end of the year. The remaining 70 schools are projected to be finished within the next two years, benefiting students in various cities and towns across all regions of Ghana.
The Smart Schools will be equipped with solar panels to promote environmental sustainability, allowing them to operate off the national electricity grid. The modernized infrastructure will advance teaching and learning, creating a conducive atmosphere for education. These schools aim to represent new urban landmarks that incorporate sustainable energy practices and cater to the unique climatic conditions of Ghana.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, highlighted the positive impact of technology-based education on students’ learning outcomes and emphasized the importance of creating safe, inclusive, and effective learning environments for all students. The government is committed to ensuring that education facilities are child, disability, and gender-sensitive by 2030.
