As Easter approaches, a group of Ghanaian Christians have undertaken a sacred journey to Israel to visit Holy sites and seek blessings for themselves and their loved ones. This group of pilgrims includes individuals from various backgrounds such as medical practitioners, journalists, entrepreneurs, politicians, and church leaders, who have joined other Christians from around the world in this religious ritual. Every year, Israel welcomes over two million Christian pilgrims who visit biblical sites such as Mount Tabor, the River Jordan, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Mount of Beatitudes, the Cana Church, and lower Galilee.
Jerusalem, a crucial stop on the pilgrimage, allows participants to explore iconic landmarks and trace the footsteps of biblical figures. Capernaum, a town on the shores of the Sea of Galilee associated with miracles performed by Jesus Christ, is also a focal point of the pilgrimage. This journey not only helps individuals connect with the roots of Christianity but also provides an opportunity for spiritual enlightenment and renewal as Easter celebrations draw near.
Tour guides at the holy sites have shared their insights with the Ghanaian Times, highlighting the dedication and excitement shown by the pilgrims. Liviu Lieverman, a tour guide, expressed his excitement in guiding people from around the world through historic places in Israel. He mentioned that Christians flock to Israel for pilgrimages during the months of February and March, and he is delighted to accompany them on their journey.
Some of the pilgrims interviewed by the Ghanaian Times emphasized the importance of their experiences in Israel. A retired educationist from Accra, Mrs. Elizabeth Amankwa, mentioned that her first visit to Israel deepened her understanding of Biblical history. Reverend Yaw Anokye Barfour of the Methodist Church of Ghana also shared his positive experience at the Mountain of Transfiguration, encouraging Christians to take pilgrimages seriously to enhance their understanding of the religion. He highlighted the significance of having a good understanding of the Bible’s teachings and seeing evidence of Jesus Christ’s life in Israel to promote holiness and peaceful coexistence.
Reverend James Padi, the head pastor of the Gift of God Pentecostal Ministry, emphasized the importance of prayer, scripture study, and fellowship for Christians’ spiritual growth. He urged Christians to prioritize these essential components as they celebrate Easter.
From Raissa Sambou in Jerusalem, Israel, the Ghanaian pilgrims continue their journey, seeking blessings, spiritual enlightenment, and a deeper connection with their faith as they visit Holy sites and reflect on the significance of Easter in the Christian calendar.
