The Ghana American Football Federation (GAFF), the national governing body for American football and non-contact flag football, recently participated in a training camp in Johannesburg, South Africa. The camp took place on February 16, 2024, in collaboration with the South African American Football Federation. The purpose of the camp was to prepare for upcoming competitions, namely the Andia Bowl and King Bowl in Croatia and the Netherlands, respectively, scheduled later this year.
Both national federations, GAFF and the South African American Football Federation, have been officially invited to represent Africa in the tournaments through qualification. During the training camp, the two federations engaged in bilateral talks to discuss how they could collaborate to develop both American football and non-contact flag football in their respective countries.
The Secretary General of GAFF highlighted the importance of the partnership and the potential for growth in the sport. Following the U-12 team’s participation in the NFL flagship program in Florida, USA earlier this year, GAFF is focused on developing teams in the U14, U16, U19, and senior categories. The Secretary General mentioned that this was the first collaboration of its kind between the two federations and expressed optimism for future cooperation.
At the conclusion of the training camp, GAFF officials met with the President of the South African Federation and his executive team in Benoni, Johannesburg. The nine-member GAFF team, consisting of seven athletes and two officials, had their trip sponsored by GAFF, Northern Rok Limited, and MC-bbphylls Protocol Consult. This support allowed the team to participate in the training camp and engage in valuable discussions with their South African counterparts.
The training camp served as a platform for knowledge sharing, skill development, and team building. It provided an opportunity for athletes from both countries to learn from each other and enhance their understanding of the sport. The collaboration between GAFF and the South African American Football Federation is a significant step towards promoting American football and non-contact flag football in Africa.
Looking ahead, GAFF is committed to furthering the development of the sport in Ghana and across the continent. Through partnerships, training camps, and participation in international competitions, GAFF aims to grow the American football community and foster a competitive spirit among athletes. The recent training camp in Johannesburg signifies the beginning of a new chapter for American football in Ghana and Africa as a whole.
