Ghana and Malta have renewed their commitment to enhancing cooperation for the benefit of their respective citizens. In order to facilitate progress in various areas of mutual interest, a joint commission has been established to oversee the implementation of numerous agreements signed between the two countries.

The negotiations will cover a range of sectors including higher education, aviation services, migration, and the hospitality industry. Additionally, both nations have agreed to focus on increasing trade volumes and creating more opportunities for private investment.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced these developments during a joint press conference with President George William Vella of Malta, which took place at the Jubilee House. The two leaders had engaged in bilateral talks aimed at strengthening their cooperation.

President Vella’s visit to Ghana included discussions with both public and private sector representatives. The visit underscored the commitment of both countries to expanding their friendly relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration.

During the discussions, there was a particular emphasis on enhancing trade between Ghana and Malta, supporting candidates from both countries in international organizations, addressing migration issues, global governance reforms, and deepening political consultations on mutual interests.

As 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and Malta, both leaders highlighted the significance of their longstanding partnership. President Vella expressed his country’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Ghana, not only at the political level but also through engagement with the private sector and civil society.

President Vella praised Ghana’s achievements and wished the country success in hosting the 13th African Games. He also announced Malta’s decision to open its first sub-Saharan diplomatic presence in Ghana, underscoring the importance the country places on its relations with Ghana and other African nations.

The Maltese President emphasized the potential for cooperation in various sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, financial services, tourism, culture, climate change, and pharmaceuticals. He also highlighted opportunities for educational exchanges, training, and upskilling for young people in Ghana.

President Vella reiterated Malta’s willingness to offer opportunities for Ghanaians to study at institutions in Malta, including the University of Malta, the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies, and other specialized institutions.

Furthermore, Malta reaffirmed its support for the positive relationship between Ghana and the European Union. The visit concluded with a state banquet hosted by President Akufo-Addo in honor of President Vella.

Overall, the renewed commitment between Ghana and Malta signals a strengthened partnership that aims to benefit both countries and foster mutual development and cooperation across various sectors.
