The German government has allocated a €1.1m grant to Prefos Limited for the establishment of a 75 MW Solar Assembly Plant in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. This project, initiated last month and scheduled for completion by 2026, aims to manufacture “semi-knocked down” solar-powered streetlights and solar panels for both local and international markets. The assembly plant is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s energy sector by producing 600 pieces of SKD LEDs and 500 pieces of solar-powered LEDs daily.

During a signing ceremony in Accra, a representative from the German embassy, Ms. Paulina Okkens, announced that the grant was secured through the Investment for Employment (IFE) initiative, created by the KfW Development Bank on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. She emphasized Germany’s commitment to partnering with companies and investors to generate employment opportunities, improve working conditions, and enhance social protection within communities.

Prefos Limited, the Executive Director, Mr. Alexie Kwasi Fosu, expressed optimism about the facility’s ability to meet the growing demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions. He highlighted the plant’s expected yearly power export of 100,000 kVA, aiming to lessen the burden on the national grid while providing a reliable alternative energy source. Additionally, Mr. Fosu underscored the project’s potential in creating job opportunities and apprenticeship programs, fostering economic prosperity not only in Ghana but also across Africa.

Moreover, Prefos Limited’s commitment to environmental sustainability was highlighted, with a focus on providing eco-friendly technologies to safeguard the planet for future generations. The company has embarked on flagship projects that transform street lighting and beautification efforts by transitioning from high-pressure sodium lights to LEDs and renewable energy solar lights.

Mr. Fosu extended his gratitude to the German government for their support, acknowledging the timely and essential nature of their partnership in advancing solutions in the renewable energy sector. KfW’s representative, Mr. Arndt Wierheim, mentioned that Germany has supported eight projects in Ghana, with a total volume of approximately €55m, including a grant contribution of €19m. These projects span across various sectors such as energy, agribusiness, and consumer goods production.

In conclusion, the collaboration between the German government and Prefos Limited in the establishment of the Solar Assembly Plant is expected to bring about positive changes in Ghana’s energy landscape, creating economic opportunities and promoting sustainable development. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and the pursuit of innovative solutions for a brighter future.
