The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) recently made headlines for its decision to suspend consultations on a proposed $20 charge for travelers. The GACL released a statement acknowledging that concerns from travelers and stakeholders prompted the suspension of the fee. Scheduled meetings to address the matter further were halted in light of the growing opposition to the charge.

In response to the suspension, Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South constituency and former Minority Leader, criticized the charge, calling it illegal as Parliament had not approved it. He questioned the authority of the GACL to impose such fees and called for accountability from the Minister of Transport.

Iddrisu raised important questions about the legality of the fees, asking, “What authority does the Ghana Airport Company have to impose fees, and are these charges consistent with the Fees Act approved by the Parliament of Ghana?” He expressed concern that the fees would burden Ghanaian travelers from abroad.

Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for the Nhyiaeso Constituency, cautioned against politicizing the issue, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal procedures. He supported parliamentary intervention but urged colleagues to avoid politicization and engage in constructive dialogue.

In response to the growing controversy, First Deputy Speaker Andrew Amoako Asiamah presided over the House and ruled that the Transport Minister should appear before MPs on March 19 to provide clarification on the matter. This decision reflects the seriousness with which the issue is being taken by the Parliament and the government.

The debate over the proposed $20 charge highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in government decision-making. It also underscores the need for proper consultation and approval processes when implementing new fees or charges that may impact the public.

The GACL’s decision to suspend consultations shows that they are taking the concerns of travelers and stakeholders seriously. Moving forward, it will be essential for the Transport Minister to provide clarity on the authority behind the proposed fees and address any legal questions that have been raised.

Overall, the issue serves as a reminder of the importance of oversight and accountability in government actions. By engaging in open dialogue and adhering to legal procedures, lawmakers can ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of the public and are carried out in a transparent and responsible manner.
