The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made a significant decision regarding the parliamentary primaries for the Yendi Constituency in the Northern Region. Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, the current Member of Parliament for the constituency, has been confirmed as the sole Parliamentary Candidate for the 2024 general elections. This decision was passed during the NEC meeting in accordance with Article 12 of the party’s constitution.
A press statement signed by the General Secretary of the party, Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, was released after the meeting to announce this resolution. The statement highlighted that the primaries in the Yendi Constituency faced violence on January 27, 2024, during the ballot counting process. The contest for the parliamentary seat was between Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama and Hajia Abibata Shani Mahama Zakariah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).
Following the chaotic atmosphere during the counting process, Hajia Abibata Shani Mahama submitted a petition to the party’s leadership, calling for the annulment of the election results. Her petition alleged a conspiracy among some party officials to manipulate the elections in favor of a specific candidate, which she believed went against the democratic values of the party.
Despite these challenges, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama expressed his gratitude to the NEC for confirming him as the Parliamentary Candidate for the Yendi Constituency. He emphasized his commitment to unity within the party and rallying all members to support him in the upcoming general elections. Alhaji Mahama’s goal is to secure a victory for the party in the constituency with a significant margin.
He extended an olive branch to all party bigwigs, former aspirants, and supporters, calling for unity and the setting aside of differences for the greater good of the party. Alhaji Mahama emphasized the importance of party members remaining committed and working together for the development of the constituency.
Furthermore, he reiterated his “New Yendi City Agenda” (NYC) to bring the desired development to the people of the area. Alhaji Mahama also expressed his gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for their guidance and support throughout the process.
In conclusion, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama’s confirmation as the sole Parliamentary Candidate for the Yendi Constituency sets the stage for a united front within the NPP as they prepare for the 2024 general elections. The party’s focus is on retaining the parliamentary seat and working towards the overall development of the constituency.
