Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, before entering politics, served as the Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017. During her tenure, she focused on important initiatives such as reducing teacher absenteeism, establishing special schools, and implementing the BECE Private Candidates Policy. She also played a crucial role in the introduction of the Free SHS program, which greatly improved the quality of education under the Mahama administration.
Apart from her political career, Professor Opoku-Agyemang has made significant contributions to academia. She served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and as the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa based in Zimbabwe. Her educational journey began at Aburi Girls and Wesley Girls High School before she pursued a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Cape Coast. She furthered her studies and obtained a PhD in English literature from York University in Canada.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has chaired numerous Boards and Committees, including the Council of the University College of Education, Winneba, and the Academic Committee of the Ghana Council for Tertiary Education. She has received several honors and awards for her remarkable contributions to education in Ghana. She is also an active member of prestigious organizations such as the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the University Teachers Association of Ghana, and the African Literature Association, USA.
As a two-time Fulbright scholar and a Fellow of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Professor Opoku-Agyemang continues to inspire and mentor countless students. Born in Cape Coast, she has dedicated her career to improving education in Ghana and beyond. With her rich academic background and extensive experience in leadership roles, she has made a lasting impact on the education sector in the country.
