The Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African Union (AU) recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in Accra, reflecting on its journey of promoting Pan-African values and advancing socio-economic and cultural development across member states of the union. This anniversary not only serves as a time to commemorate past achievements but also highlights the importance of partnership and dialogue in addressing the challenges faced by Africa.

During a press conference at the Accra Reflection Forum II, the Presiding Officer for ECOSOCC, Mr. Khalid Boudali, expressed gratitude for the collective efforts that have propelled the organization forward over the years. He emphasized the organization’s vision of integrating the voices of civil society into decision-making processes within the African Union, aiming to create a continent driven by its own people.

Over the past two decades, ECOSOCC has played a central role in promoting dialogue, partnership, and collaboration among stakeholders across Africa. The council believes that civil society is critical to the continent’s progress and has worked towards creating a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Africa. Mr. Boudali highlighted the achievements made in realizing the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and emphasized the importance of engaging with the media to convey positive messages about Africa’s transformational journey.

Mr. William Carew, the Head of ECOSOCC Secretariat, detailed the commemorative activities planned for the 20th anniversary, which coincided with the roll-out of the Second Ten Years Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063. He emphasized the vision of the African Union of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa driven by its citizens, reinstating the importance of focusing on the African Citizenry in the continental development agenda.

Established in July 2004, ECOSOCC serves as an advisory body comprised of various social and professional groups from AU Member States. The council’s mandate is to contribute through advice to the effective translation of the African Union’s objectives, principles, and policies into concrete programs and evaluating their impact. This commemoration serves as a testament to the progress made over the past two decades and the commitment to continue working towards a brighter future for the continent.

In conclusion, the 20th anniversary of ECOSOCC marks a significant milestone in the organization’s journey towards promoting Pan-African values, advancing socio-economic and cultural development, and fostering partnership and dialogue to address Africa’s challenges. It is a time to reflect on past achievements and to renew the commitment to creating an inclusive, prosperous, and united Africa driven by its citizens.
