The construction of a €10.2m garment factory has commenced in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region. The project aims to cater to both local and international markets. The factory, being developed by Messrs MUSOF Enterprise Ghana Limited, will have various sections including sewing production area, cutting and design building, and raw materials warehouse. The construction is being supported by a grant from the Facility Investing for Employment (IFE), in collaboration with KfW Development Bank and the Agricultural Development Bank Plc.
The Managing Director of IFE, Mr. Steffen Kuhl, highlighted the importance of the project in supporting economic growth in Ghana. He mentioned that Germany is supporting various projects in Ghana with a total investment of approximately 55 million EUR. The CEO of Northshore Apparel Ghana Limited, Nurideen Mohammed, emphasized the inclusion of ancillary facilities in the factory such as changing rooms, canteen facilities, and an in-house clinic to provide a conducive working environment for employees.
Mr. Mohammed also expressed the company’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 10 by providing employment opportunities for students from the Savelugu School for the Deaf. Additionally, Northshore Apparel plans to incorporate renewable energy sources by installing a 500kWp solar power system to reduce their carbon footprint and promote eco-friendly practices.
The choice of location for the factory was strategic, aiming to have a social impact on the community and facilitate easier access to the West African market. The project seeks to integrate into the cotton value chain within Ghana and the West Africa sub-region. The Paramount Chief of Yoo Traditional Area, Yoo Naa Andani Yakubu Abdulai, praised the construction of the factory for its potential to transform the economic landscape of the region and create employment opportunities for the youth.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by various dignitaries including the Managing Director of Agriculture Development Bank, Alhaji Alhassan Yakubu-Tali, and former Minister of Trade and Employment, Haruna Iddrisu. The event was chaired by Naa Pishigu Lana Alhassan Andani and witnessed by the Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive, Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Alessia Alvisini, IFE Country Manager for Ghana and Rwanda, Francis Attah Adjah, and IFE Country Focal Person, Adwoa Kwarteng Larbi.
The start of the construction of the garment factory in Savelugu marks a significant milestone in promoting economic development, job creation, and sustainability in the Northern Region of Ghana. The project’s focus on social impact, environmental responsibility, and economic empowerment underscores its importance in contributing to the growth of the local community and the broader region.
