The Danish government, in partnership with the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), is collaborating with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to conduct a feasibility study for the establishment of a drinking water plant in Aveyime, located in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region. Vibeke Sandholm Pedersen, the Deputy Head of Mission at the Danish Embassy, revealed this initiative. This project aims to provide clean and safe drinking water to approximately 1.2 million people in the Volta and Greater Accra regions once it is operational.

The strategic sector cooperation between Denmark and Ghana in the water sector has been ongoing since 2019. This partnership has been crucial in enhancing Ghana’s water sector by facilitating knowledge exchange between technical staff from both countries. As a result of this cooperation, GWCL and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly have collaborated with the city of Arhus and the water utility company, Arhus Vand, to address issues such as reducing non-revenue water levels, improving wastewater management, and enhancing climate resilience in the city of Tema.

Mrs. Pedersen addressed stakeholders at an event marking World Water Day, celebrated on March 22 each year to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater resources and advocate for their sustainable management. She highlighted the success of phase one of the cooperation and announced plans to expand activities to other regions and partnerships with more organizations. Additionally, Denmark and Ghana are set to construct a leakage detection training field at the GWCL Institute in Weija, which will help the utility company in reducing national losses.

Emphasizing the role of partnerships in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs. Pedersen expressed Denmark’s commitment to collaborating with Ghana to create a robust and sustainable water sector. Madam Faustina Boachie, Chief Manager of the Low-Income Customer Support Department at GWCL, praised the exemplary support from the Danish Embassy, stating that it will enhance capacity and empower staff to deliver safe and uninterrupted water production to more people.

Madam Boachie highlighted the Aveyime project as a beacon of hope for low-income communities, emphasizing its potential for significant impact. The collaboration between Denmark and Ghana not only contributes to the achievement of development goals but also creates a positive impact on communities in need.

In conclusion, the partnership between Denmark and Ghana in the water sector shows a commitment to improving access to clean water and sustainable water management practices. Through collaborative efforts, the two countries aim to create lasting solutions that benefit the people of Ghana and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable water sector.
