Dr Afizah Zakariah, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has emphasized the importance of creating an all-inclusive environment to support diversity, investment, and effective collaboration for women in Ghana. She stressed the need for gender integration in national planning and budgeting to address inequalities and promote gender mainstreaming at all levels.
At the launch of the National Advocacy Campaign to mark International Women’s Day, Dr. Zakariah urged the public to support initiatives that empower women and promote their participation in leadership roles. The event, organized by Plan International Ghana in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, Ghana Enterprise Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency, focused on fostering economic justice and equality for women leaders in business and entrepreneurship.
Recognizing Plan International’s continuous commitment to empowering women, Dr. Zakariah highlighted the importance of increasing women’s access to economic opportunities and decision-making power at the household and community levels. She commended efforts to build strong partnerships to break barriers and promote gender equality.
Mr. Constant Tchona, the Country Director of Plan International, emphasized that gender equality and women’s empowerment are key to breaking the cycle of poverty and building a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous society. The Women’s Innovation for Sustainable Enterprise (WISE) Project aims to improve women’s agency, self-esteem, and confidence to participate in sustainable economic growth.
The national advocacy campaign serves as a call to action to support women’s leadership and embrace diversity and inclusivity. It aims to amplify women’s voices and create a future where gender equality is a lived reality, rather than a distant dream. Dr. Zakariah and Mr. Tchona highlighted the transformative power of women’s leadership and the limitless possibilities that arise from gender equality.
In her speech, Dr. Zakariah emphasized the need to celebrate and invest in women’s social, economic, and political participation. She highlighted the challenges women face in terms of discrimination, violence, abuse, and economic exclusion, emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces and making sustainable investments to address these issues.
