Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has officially been announced as the running mate for the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. In a statement released by the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, the NDC proudly introduced Professor Opoku-Agyemang as a distinguished academic and leader with a strong dedication to education and public service. The party emphasized its commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership positions through this nomination.

John Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, expressed his confidence in Professor Opoku-Agyemang as his choice for running mate, highlighting her integrity, dedication, and vision for a better Ghana. The selection of Professor Opoku-Agyemang aligns with Article 60(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that a candidate for the office of Vice-President must be designated by the presidential candidate before the election.

Born on November 22, 1951, Professor Opoku-Agyemang is an alumna of Wesley Girls’ High School, University of Cape Coast, and York University in Canada. She served as the Education Minister under former President John Mahama from 2013 to 2017, where she championed initiatives such as the Community Day Senior High School program and the progressive free Senior High School policy.

The nomination of Professor Opoku-Agyemang adds integrity, inclusivity, representation for women and vulnerable groups, accountability, and ethical leadership to the NDC’s presidential ticket. Her previous partnership with John Mahama in the 2020 election resulted in an increased vote share for the party in the Central Region, as well as an increase in parliamentary seats.

John Mahama’s selection of Professor Opoku-Agyemang continues the NDC’s tradition of pairing a candidate from the Central Region with the presidential ticket. This tradition dates back to the partnership between Jerry Rawlings and Kor Nkensen Arkaah in 1992, and has been upheld through subsequent elections with candidates like John Mills, Martin Amidu, Mohammed Mumuni, and most recently Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur.

Overall, the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as John Mahama’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election highlights the NDC’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and the empowerment of women in leadership roles. Her wealth of knowledge, experience, and dedication to public service position her as an ideal candidate to help lead the party to victory in the upcoming election.
