A demonstration was held in Accra yesterday by a group of concerned supporters and shareholders of Accra Hearts of Oak, calling for the reconstitution of the club’s Board of Directors. The demonstrators emphasized that the term of the current Board was over and it was important to form a new one to bring some freshness into the team.
The demonstration, which was dubbed ‘Togbe must listen to minority shareholders,’ saw hundreds of participants from Accra, Kumasi, and the Eastern Region marching from the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah circle towards Adabraka. They presented a petition to the club’s National Chapters Committee (NCC) Chairman, Elvis Herman Hesse Jr., to be presented to the board.
Mr. Maxwell Yaw Asabre, a leader of the group, expressed the frustration of the supporters, stating that the past 13 years have been difficult for the club as a result of its performance. He highlighted the club’s historic achievements, including being 21 times Ghanaian champions, six straight times, and 11 times winners of the FA Cup. However, he lamented that the club has hardly been recognizable under the current board and management, managing only one league triumph in 13 years.
The group called for the retirement of the current board and the appointment of new members. They also requested the restoration of the NCC’s slot on the new board and proposed the formation of a joint committee to come up with innovative ways to get supporters to make direct monthly contributions to the club.
Additionally, the group urged the Board Chairman to halt all avoidable debts resulting from wrongful termination of contracts of players and officials. They expressed concerns about the flotation of new shares worth about GH¢300 million, as proposed and adopted at the 2018 shareholder meeting (AGM). They argued that the over-reliance on SAS Loans and the cumulative 24 per cent annual interest were not healthy for the club in the long run.
However, they commended the appointment of coach Aboubakar Ouattara and the Managing Director, Dr. Delali Anku-Adiamah, and assured them of their fullest support to succeed.
In conclusion, the demonstrators called for urgent action to reconstitute the club’s Board of Directors and address the financial and management issues affecting the club’s performance. They emphasized the importance of breathing some freshness into the team to restore its former glory. Overall, the demonstration was a united effort by supporters and shareholders to bring about positive change for Accra Hearts of Oak.
