The Gamey and Gamey ADR Institute has been commended by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo for its significant contributions to the growth of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) industry in Ghana. The institute has been recognized for offering quality training and development programs for ADR practitioners in the country. Chief Justice Torkornoo emphasized the importance of quality training in promoting professionalism in the rapidly expanding ADR field, which is gaining popularity among Ghanaians.

The commendation was made during the 2024 graduation ceremony of the Gamey and Gamey ADR Institute’s Professional Executive Master of ADR (PEM-ADR) program. The event, themed ‘Taking ADR to the next level,’ saw 29 students graduate with Executive Masters in ADR. Justice Jennifer Abena Dadzie, a Court of Appeal Judge, delivered the Chief Justice’s keynote address at the ceremony held in Tema.

Chief Justice Torkornoo highlighted the critical need for skilled ADR professionals in Ghana, a country where traditional values of mediation and reconciliation are deeply rooted. The 29 graduates underwent 31 weeks of advanced training in ADR mechanisms, specializing in mediation and arbitration. She praised the institute’s PEM-ADR program for its innovative course content, including modules such as Appreciative Inquiry, PULSE Discovery, Self-Mediation, and Managerial and Executive Mediation, which elevate the effectiveness of ADR processes.

Furthermore, Chief Justice Torkornoo acknowledged the Gamey and Gamey ADR Institute’s partnership with the Court-Connected ADR Programme of the Judicial Service, providing graduates with opportunities for mediation internships at courts and engagement as Court Mediators. She assured private ADR training institutions, particularly the Gamey and Gamey ADR Institute, of enhanced collaboration from the Judicial Service to promote quality ADR services nationwide.

Embracing ADR principles and practices can alleviate the burden on the Judiciary, empower individuals and communities to participate in conflict resolution, promote social cohesion, and enhance access to justice. Additionally, ADR has the potential to unlock economic opportunities and foster sustainable development in society. Chief Justice Torkornoo congratulated the 25th PEM-ADR cohort members on completing their course and urged them to maintain professionalism in their ADR practice.

Mr. Austin Gamey, CEO of Gamey and Gamey Group, emphasized the importance of adopting ADR mechanisms, especially mediation, to resolve differences in a civilized manner. He encouraged various institutions, organizations, and individuals to establish internal mediation offices and units, equipping staff with mediation skills to resolve disputes effectively. He also announced plans to launch a Youth Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation Programme to promote ADR awareness among young people and equip them with conflict resolution skills.

In closing, Dr. Fidelis Patrice Seddoh, a Commissioner of the National Labour Commission, congratulated the graduates and emphasized the importance of continuing to build practical skills to help parties resolve cases effectively. Mr. Sebastian Adama, the cohort president, described the training program as transformational and highlighted its focus on ADR specialization and the significance of effective communication in preventing and resolving disputes. The graduates expressed gratitude for the valuable skills gained and their commitment to using them for the benefit of their families, organizations, society, and the nation as a whole.
