A Bio-digester Construction and Installation Training Centre was inaugurated at the Ada College of Education in the Greater Accra Region. This center aims to build the capacity of bio-digester constructors, train individuals interested in building these toilets, students, and those who will serve as trainer of trainers.
The Deputy Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr Amidu Chinnia Issahaku, highlighted the importance of collaboration in ensuring that only trained and qualified individuals construct bio-digester toilets. He emphasized the need for innovative solutions, resilience, and collective action to address the challenges of sanitation and water resources in Ada and other parts of the world.
Mr. Issahaku stressed the significance of clean water and proper sanitation as fundamental human rights and essential for building a sustainable and prosperous country. Bio-digester toilets are designed to treat fecal matter in an eco-friendly manner by converting waste into good soil condition. This technology can reduce water contamination, improve health, and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse emissions.
The Minister mentioned that there are about 130,251 bio-digester toilets in use across the country due to their ease of installation, minimal space requirement, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. This makes them a preferred choice for both rich and poor individuals.
The Principal of the College, Professor Prince Boateng, highlighted the role of the institution in uplifting the status of communities within its area. He explained that open defecation impacts livelihoods, contaminates water bodies, and exposes individuals to water-borne diseases. The establishment of a bio-digester center at the college was long overdue, as it is a selected Technical and Vocational Education Training institution in the country.
