President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to come together and establish a consensus on the values that are important to society in order to pass them on to future generations. He emphasized that instilling these values in children is crucial for their development, and that relying solely on schools to do this is not sufficient.
Speaking at the 67th Independence Anniversary Parade in Koforidua, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of consensus on important values as a way to ensure that they are passed down through the generations. The theme of this year’s event was “Our Democracy, Our Pride”, and it was the 7th time the celebration was held outside of the national capital, Accra.
The parade featured 21 contingents from various security agencies and 11 contingents from schools in the Eastern Region. A total of 900 children and their teachers from different schools in the region participated in the ceremony, along with market women, public and private sector workers. The event also included performances of Ghanaian songs, poems, cultural displays, and gymnastic performances.
President Akufo-Addo expressed concern about the growing trend of parents relying on schools and teachers to raise their children, rather than taking an active role themselves. He stressed the importance of instilling values that define the Ghanaian identity, beyond just cultural aspects like music, dance, and food.
The President acknowledged the challenges facing the education system in Ghana, but also highlighted the progress being made through initiatives like the Free Senior High School policy. He emphasized the importance of preparing children for the modern economy, including a focus on science and technology, and the need for a more holistic approach to education that goes beyond academics.
In terms of the economy, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the difficulties the country has faced but expressed optimism for the future. He highlighted the potential economic benefits of projects like the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation, which aims to boost the economy through the Integrated Aluminium Industry.
President Akufo-Addo also praised the progress Ghana has made in democracy, noting the importance of free speech and media freedom. He acknowledged that there is still work to be done in improving the quality of public discourse, but overall, Ghana has made significant strides in building a functioning democracy.
The Special Guest of honor at the event, President Alassane Ouattara of La Cote d’Ivoire, commended Ghana for its achievements and leadership in Africa. He highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, and praised President Akufo-Addo for his commitment to regional integration and peace as the chairman of ECOWAS.
In conclusion, the event in Koforidua was a celebration of Ghanaian values, culture, and achievements, as well as an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made and the work that still lies ahead. President Akufo-Addo’s call for unity and consensus on important values is a reminder of the collective responsibility to build a better future for all Ghanaians.
