The Accra Great Olympics Supporters Union (AGOSU) executives paid a visit to the family of the late former Black Stars and club captain, Emmanuel Awuley Quaye, at his residence in Dansoman. Awuley Quaye, affectionately known as Awuley Quaye Senior, led the Black Stars to victory in the African Nations Cup (AFCON) in 1978 and played a significant role in his club’s success during the 1970s.

On March 25, Awuley Quaye Senior passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will always be remembered. The AGOSU delegation, consisting of Chairman Joseph Odartey Boye (Uncle Joe Boye), Liaison Officer Eric Niikwei Kotey (Kintona), and James Brocke (Kookailey), visited the family to offer their heartfelt condolences.

Mr. Boye described Awuley Quaye Senior as a hero who made a lasting impact on the sport of football, emphasizing that his loss is a great tragedy for Ghanaian football. The family, represented by Awuley Quaye Junior, who also had a football career with Great Olympics and the national U-17 team, the Black Starlets, expressed their gratitude to the supporters for their support during this time of mourning.

Awuley Quaye Junior reassured the AGOSU executives that the family is working tirelessly to organize a fitting burial for the late football legend. As a gesture of support, the union presented the family with 50 packs of bottled water to assist with the funeral arrangements.

Awuley Quaye Senior was a celebrated defender for Great Olympics, playing a key role in the team’s triumphs in domestic competitions throughout the 1970s. His contributions helped Great Olympics secure victories in the Premier League in 1974, the FA Cup in 1975, the Super Champions Cup in 1976, and the Guinness Gala Cup in 1977. Furthermore, he led the Black Stars to their historic AFCON victory in 1978, earning the original trophy for Ghana.

The passing of Awuley Quaye Senior marks the end of an era in Ghanaian football, but his legacy and contributions to the sport will never be forgotten. The AGOSU executives’ visit to his family serves as a tribute to the impact Awuley Quaye Senior had on the football community in Ghana.

This report was compiled by Andrew Nortey, highlighting the reverence and respect shown by the Accra Great Olympics Supporters Union towards the late football icon, Awuley Quaye Senior, and his grieving family.
