The Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice played a crucial role in saving the nation an impressive amount of GH¢15 trillion by successfully defending court cases brought against the government. This significant achievement was highlighted by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame. The cases the office successfully defended were mainly related to alleged breach of contracts and default payments to companies that provided services to the government.

During his State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Akufo-Addo commended the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice for saving the country more than GH¢15 trillion, emphasizing the importance of their work in protecting the public purse. However, the total figure raised doubts among the Minority in Parliament, prompting Mr. Dame to provide clarity through a press briefing in his office.

Mr. Dame explained that the GH¢15 trillion mentioned by the President was primarily associated with a case involving African Automobile Limited, which sued the government for non-payment of vehicles and equipment supplied to the Ministry of Employment and Manpower between 1997 and 1999. The total amount for the vehicles and equipment supplied in 1999 was approximately GH¢979,000. In these cases, compound interest claims were often sought by the parties, and the Attorney-General’s office effectively represented the government to secure favorable judgments.

In one particular case, Mr. Dame highlighted how his office led evidence to prove that a judgment was obtained through fraud, ultimately leading to its dismissal by the high court. This demonstrates the dedication and professionalism with which the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice approached each case, ensuring the best possible outcome for the government.

Mr. Dame emphasized that the Nana Akufo-Addo administration has a strong commitment to good governance and protecting the public purse. He assured journalists that the government would continue to operate with transparency and accountability, upholding the rule of law and serving the best interests of the nation.

Overall, the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice’s successful defense in these court cases not only saved the government an impressive amount of money but also showcased their expertise and dedication in upholding justice and the principles of good governance. Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame’s leadership and the office’s contributions have undoubtedly made a significant impact in safeguarding the nation’s resources and upholding the rule of law.
