Ghana’s cycling team is gearing up for the 13th African Games, which are set to take place from March 8-23. Over 20 cyclists from across the country have been invited to join the national cycling team for this continental event. With cycling being one of the Olympic qualifiers, the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) is hoping to make a significant impact at the competition.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GCF, Mr. Dennis Moore, spoke to the Times Sports, stating that the technical team has planned a series of training regimens to prepare the cyclists for the multi-sport event. This includes a 204km road race from Nsawam to Kibi, with a repeat of the race scheduled for today to help build the cyclists’ stamina. Their aim is to fine-tune the cyclists ahead of the competition.
The preparations for the African Games began last year, and the current focus is on building the cyclists’ endurance for the games. They also plan to engage in some races in Ablekuma-Olebu, Accra in the coming days before selecting the final team for the games. The ultimate goal is to get the cyclists in peak condition to compete for medals and secure a qualifying position for the next Olympic Games.
Mr. Shabaan Mohammed, the Secretary General of the GCF, expressed confidence in the cyclists’ dedication and sacrifice for the games, stating that they are determined to make the nation proud. He also lauded the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Games for their support in ensuring that the cyclists are adequately prepared for the competition.
Despite acknowledging the challenge posed by countries like Eritrea, Morocco, Algeria, and Burkina Faso, Mr. Mohammed remained optimistic about Ghana’s ability to rise to the occasion. Cycling is one of the Olympic qualifiers for the African Games, alongside athletics, badminton, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and wrestling.
In conclusion, the Ghanaian cycling team is diligently preparing for the 13th African Games, targeting success at the competition and securing a spot in the upcoming Olympic Games. With a series of training regimens and races lined up, the team is committed to representing the nation with pride and determination. The support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organising Committee is crucial in ensuring that the cyclists are well-prepared for this continental event.
