In a surprising turn of events, the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in constituencies with sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) have undergone a significant upheaval. A total of 28 MPs have failed to secure a return to Parliament, signaling a notable shift in the party’s internal dynamics leading up to the forthcoming 2024 general elections.
These defeats represent a significant transformation within the NPP, with fresh candidates emerging to compete for parliamentary positions. In addition, nineteen MPs affiliated with the majority caucus of the NPP have declared that they will not be seeking re-election in the 2024 parliamentary elections. This voluntary departure has sparked substantial speculation and discussions regarding the future direction of the NPP in the years ahead.
Prominent figures such as Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Suame), First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei Owusu (Bekwai), Atta Akyea (Abuakwa South), Joe Ghartey (Essikado Ketan), and Ken Agyapong (Assin Central) have chosen not to pursue re-election. Their collective decision undoubtedly creates a void in the party’s leadership and parliamentary representation.
