Eleven countries have confirmed their participation in the arm wrestling event at the 13th Africa Games in Accra. Those countries include host Ghana, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Egypt, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Togo. The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) issued a statement signed by its President, Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, ahead of the event which is scheduled to take place from March 8-24. With only a few weeks left before the start of the continent’s biggest sporting event, these countries will compete for laurels in arm wrestling.

The event is expected to be world-class and memorable, building on the success of the 12th Africa Armwrestling Championship held in June, which also served as the qualifier for the Africa Games. Armwrestling, a traditional, popular, and easy-to-play game, has gained recognition as a leading sport on the continent due to the significant investment made by the AFA.

The Africa Games arm wrestling competition will be held at the Cedi Hall, University of Ghana, Legon from March 13-16. Mr. Asibey expressed excitement at the rapid growth of the sport in Africa, attributing it to the hard work of his team in making arm wrestling a competitive sport at the Africa Games.

He commended the Ghana government, Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Association of Africa Sports Confederation (AASC), Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC), and assured that adequate preparations were in place to provide athletes, officials, and stakeholders with a hospitable reception and high-level sports performance during the games.

“The vision is to make arm wrestling the sport of choice by encouraging participation and enhancing development on the continent. We are on course as we rewrite another history by competing in the Africa Games,” Asibey said.

Athletes will compete in various weight categories for both men and women, ranging from 55kg to +100kg for men and 55kg to +80kg for women. The participation of these eleven countries in the arm wrestling event at the 13th Africa Games is a testament to the growth and popularity of the sport on the African continent.

The games are expected to be a showcase of talent and sportsmanship, highlighting the continued development of arm wrestling as a competitive and recognized sport in Africa. With the support of various organizations and the effort put in by the AFA, these Africa Games will undoubtedly be a significant milestone for arm wrestling in the region.
