Award-winning Ghanaian Afrobeats artist and rapper, Bashir Annan, known in showbiz as Gambo, is making a name for himself internationally, networking with top names in the American music industry and promoting his home country of Ghana. His latest coup was teaching American rap icon Snoop Dogg to speak Twi, an Akan language spoken in Ghana.
During a recent visit to the US, Gambo met with several legendary American music icons, including Jermaine Dupri, Timberland, and Jim Jones, who will be featured on the remix of GAMBO’s hit Record DRIP. He also held a productive session with Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., in Los Angeles, California, in the lead up to the African pre-Grammy Awards Global Affairs event. This event, started by All We Do Is Work CEO Terry Williams and presented by Godfather Entertainment with co-founder Michael Harris of Death Row Records, provided an ideal setting for the meeting.
During the meeting, Gambo discussed his upcoming music album, which he is currently recording in the United States. He shared details of his first full studio album, following the successful release of his ‘New Era’ Extended Play (EP), which features popular songs such as ‘Drip’, ‘Beautiful’, and ‘Settle’.
Snoop Dogg was impressed by Gambo’s dedication and encouraged him to continue pushing the boundaries. Additionally, Snoop Dogg expressed his interest in visiting Ghana in the near future.
Gambo, who actively works to promote the positive aspects of Ghana internationally in a bid to boost tourism and diaspora investment, used this opportunity to teach Snoop Dogg a few Twi phrases, such as “Akwaaba” which means welcome. This gesture underlined Gambo’s commitment to sharing his culture and language with the world.
In addition to his high-profile meetings in the US, Gambo has also been collaborating with fellow African musicians. For example, at the end of 2023, he featured Nigeria’s Goya Menor on his street anthem, ‘Cut Soap.’ Not one to rest on his laurels, Gambo has continued to expand his collaborations, most notably with another Nigerian artist, Lade, on his highly inspirational single, ‘Nobody’.
Not surprisingly, Gambo’s efforts have garnered widespread attention, with ‘Nobody’ enjoying heavy airplay and media coverage in both Nigeria and Ghana.
As a musician and entrepreneur, Gambo understands the power of networking and has leveraged his connections to advance his career while making a positive impact on the perception of Ghana in the international community.
We can certainly expect more great things from Gambo in the near future as he continues to bridge the gap between Ghana and the global music industry. His talent and drive, combined with his commitment to promoting Ghana, make him a force to be reckoned with on the international music scene.
