The Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), Yankuba Darboe, recently announced the successful disbursement of D14M to the 28 wards in the West Coast Region (WCR). This significant achievement was made possible through fiscal prudence and discipline within the council. However, amidst the celebration of this accomplishment, Darboe also issued a stern warning against the misappropriation of the disbursed funds.
On Wednesday, the BAC distributed D14M among the various wards of WCR for their development projects as outlined by the ward councillors. During a ceremony held to present the cash, Darboe reflected on the challenges faced by the council in mobilizing and distributing the ward development funds.
Darboe revealed that the council had encountered difficulties, including the arrest and detention of all honourable councillors by the police. These actions were taken in an effort to combat corruption within the council and ensure the transparent and accountable disbursement of funds.
The chairman emphasized the importance of the administration’s firm stance against corruption, noting that without such measures, the funds disbursed would not have been successfully mobilized. He likened the process of obtaining the funds to going through “hell,” highlighting the struggles faced by the council in ensuring the funds were obtained through legitimate and ethical means.
Darboe urged the Ward Development Committees (WDCs) to heed the advice of David Gomez, the Director of Good Governance at the Ministry of Lands. Gomez emphasized the importance of involving communities in development projects to ensure their ownership and effective implementation. He stressed the need for judicious utilization of funds to avoid any mismanagement that could jeopardize the progress of the projects.
In conclusion, Darboe issued a stark warning to WDCs, cautioning them against any misappropriation of the disbursed funds. He emphasized the significance of using the funds responsibly and transparently, as any misuse could result in severe consequences for the committees involved.
Overall, the successful disbursement of D14M by the BAC is a testament to the council’s commitment to accountability and transparency in governance. Through fiscal prudence and discipline, the council has demonstrated its dedication to serving the communities in the West Coast Region and ensuring that development funds are utilized for the benefit of all residents.
