On Wednesday, the World Bank marked International Women’s Day with a celebration, two days ahead of the official global commemorations. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress.”
The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, Fatou Kinteh, participated in the World Bank’s event, highlighting the ongoing journey towards gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls worldwide. Minister Kinteh emphasized the importance of investing in women’s health, education, and economic opportunities as a means to drive progress for all. She highlighted The Gambia’s achievements in empowering women, citing the Women Enterprise Fund as a significant milestone.
Joining Minister Kinteh at the event was the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Claudiana Cole, who underscored the essential role women play in society. Minister Cole stated that societies cannot advance if women are marginalized from the development process.
Keiko Miwa, the Country Director of the World Bank, also addressed the event, acknowledging the remarkable achievements of women globally. She highlighted the importance of continuing the journey towards gender equality and empowerment for every girl and woman. Miwa emphasized the need for collective action to ensure that every woman has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
