The Minister for Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, Honorable Ebrima Sillah, is overseeing the progress of the construction works on the Bertil Harding Highway and the OIC 50km Roads Project in preparation for the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Summit in May 2024 in The Gambia. Minister Sillah expressed confidence that the Bertil Harding Highway will be ready in time for the event, with construction progressing well on the road infrastructure.

According to Minister Sillah, the plan is for the stretch of road from the Airport junction to Senegambia to be completely ready by the time of the summit. He mentioned that the second layer of asphalt is already being laid, railings are being fitted, and the remaining work involves road furniture. Minister Sillah also expressed satisfaction that most of the necessary materials are available locally, ensuring smooth progress in the construction process.

In addition to the Bertil Harding Highway, Minister Sillah highlighted the completion of other key road projects in the Greater Banjul Area. He mentioned that the road from Senegambia to Sting Corner is also expected to be completed, along with the overpass bridge at Kairaba Avenue before the summit. The Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure will ensure that all road works are completed on time, although accessibility during the summit will be determined by the Ministry of Interior and other security agencies.

Honorable Sillah provided updates on the status of the 50km roads project, noting that significant progress has been made on various road sections. Roads such as the Wullinkama to Ghana Town, Kairaba Avenue through the National Environment Agency to Old Jeshwang, and the Serrekunda General Hospital to Bertil Harding Highway are either completed or nearing completion. The Bundung Road project is also advancing, with all roads expected to be equipped with solar-powered street lights and other safety measures upon completion.

The completion of these road projects is seen as essential for enhancing the smooth and safe movement of people, goods, and services in The Gambia. The OIC Summit, scheduled for the 4th to 5th of May 2024, will see the participation of various heads of state and representatives. Minister Sillah reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the successful hosting of the summit and the continued development of the country’s infrastructure.

In conclusion, Minister Ebrima Sillah’s leadership in overseeing the construction of key road projects in preparation for the OIC Summit demonstrates the government’s dedication to improving infrastructure and ensuring a successful event. The completion of these road projects will not only benefit the summit but also contribute to the long-term development and connectivity of The Gambia.
