The West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP) recently held its 36th Annual General Meeting, Scientific Symposium, and 66th Council Meeting in Banjul, where new Fellows were inducted into the College. The event, held in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of The Gambia, focused on the theme of ‘Medicine Safety’ and featured keynote addresses from Dr. Edit A Annan from WHO Afro Office and Sambo Sowe, Director of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Higher Education.
During the opening ceremony, a total of eighty-one students were inducted as Fellows after successfully completing the four-year Fellowship program. The program also saw the investiture of Honorary Fellows, Foundation Fellows, and Elected Fellows from various countries in the West African region. Alhaji Murtada Sesay, President of WAPCP, welcomed the attendees and emphasized the importance of exploring The Gambia as a tourist destination.
The President highlighted the College’s commitment to addressing public health challenges and improving healthcare delivery in the region. He also called for a moment of silence to remember colleagues who had passed away since the last AGM in Monrovia. The President stressed the need for pharmacists to respond to new challenges, such as the recent issue of Acute Kidney Injury, with intellectual and practical solutions.
Mrs. Markieu Janneh Kaira, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of The Gambia, provided insights into WAPCP’s Professional Training Program, which aims to meet the evolving roles of pharmacists globally. She emphasized the College’s goal of enhancing health outcomes by increasing the number of skilled pharmacists through Fellowship programs. Mr. Jimmy Olu Coker, Gambia Chapter Chairman, underscored the importance of the symposium’s theme, ‘Medicines Safety and Pharmacovigilance,’ in addressing the misuse and abuse of medications in the region.
Mr. Coker congratulated the new Fellows for their hard work and welcomed colleagues from Francophone countries who were newly inducted into the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists. The event provided a platform for members to discuss topical health issues and make decisions that contribute to regional health improvement. The College continues to encourage enrollment in Fellowship programs to enhance the technical knowledge and skills of pharmaceutical professionals.
