The 36th Annual General Meeting, Scientific Symposium, and 66th Council Meeting of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists, in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of The Gambia, kicked off at the Kairaba Hotel from April 15th to 19th, 2024. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Medicine Safety,’ with keynote speakers including Professor Pierre Gomez, The Gambian Minister of Higher Education, and Dr. Edit A. Annan from the WHO Afro Office in Congo Brazzaville.

During the opening ceremony, Professor Ibrahim Adekunle Oreagba, the Secretary-General of WAPCP, announced that eighty-one students will be inducted as Fellows in various specialties offered by the College after successfully passing the final examinations of the four-year Fellowship programme. The ceremony also included the investiture of two Honorary Fellows, five Foundation Fellows from three Francophone countries (Benin, Senegal, Togo), and one Lusophone country (Guinea Bissau), as well as nine Elected Fellows from the West African region.

Among the distinguished individuals elected as Fellows are Mr. Babanding Sabally, the former Director of National Pharmaceutical Services and current Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health in The Gambia; Professor Christianah M. Adeyeye, Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in Nigeria (NAFDAC); Dr. Obi Adigwe, Director General of the Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development; Pharm Farouk Salim, the former Director General of Standards Organization of Nigeria; and Dr. Teresa Pounds, the immediate Past President of the Nigerian Association of Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Scientists in the Americas.

Ms. Kachollom Shangti Daju, mni, the current Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and Dr. Prosper Hiag from Cameroon, the current Vice President of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), were honored as recipients of the Honorary Fellow of the College.

The AGM will also feature academic presentations of conference abstracts by participants from the 5-member College, including The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone on the fourth day of the conference.

Overall, the event promises to be a platform for industry professionals, academics, and policymakers to engage in discussions and share insights on medicine safety and other critical issues in the field of pharmacy. With a lineup of distinguished speakers and a diverse range of topics to be covered, the 36th AGM and Symposium of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists are set to be a valuable and enriching experience for all participants.
